Good Morning,
Before I move the rest of my domains over to Cartika, I am testing this single account over the next 30 days ... monitoring stream speeds, uptime, getting use to the CP, etc. (2 day report is promising :) )
I added a domain and subdomain for that domain. When I FTP in, I see both directories listed under my root directory. Great! Back in the CP, I deleted the subdomain, then deleted the top level domain. When I FTP in, I still see both directories. Huh?
- Do I need to delete those directories manually through FTP, or is there another step in the CP I need to perform? I want to make sure I am doing this right.
- If you have a domain with a few subdomains and you want to get rid of all of it, can you just delete the top level domain or do you have to do what I did and delete the subs first, then the top level?
----------
Side Notes:
- If Cartika has any pull with Parallels, I have a big recommendation for the delete resource pages (delete email account, domain, etc). On the delete confirmation page, it would be really useful if it listed the domain, subdomain, email account, etc you are about to delete to make sure you are deleting the right one. "You are about to delete domain blahblah.com. All your related data will be lost." instead of "You are about to disable Domain. All your related data will be lost."
- It would be great if you could "hide" certain entries when displaying your account resources (aliases on the email accounts page, subdomains in the domain list, etc). I know Parallels bought H-Sphere and it is not Plesk, but years ago when I used Plesk it already had this (this was 2002).

Hello,
1. I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say that this is a Windows account? (I don't have your account pulled up).
If so, then this sometimes will happen due to the way that the control panel and other servers communicate (or if you elected to retain the web content while deleting the domain/subdomain). If that happens, you can just remove the folder from FTP and not worry about it. However, if this is a Linux account - it should remove almost immediately.
2. Honestly - I've never tried it. I would 'assume' that by deleting the parent, you would also be deleting the sub domains as well (logically speaking). However, I've personally never tried it (I delete all the sub domains by hand when working on my own things).
====
Side note 1: This is a pet peeve of mine too personally - it's been brought to their attention many times. However, they seem to not want to change their templates.
Side note 2: You can -- if it's not enabled in a given plan, it's hidden from the user. You would just need to deselect any options you don't want to appear in the plan and the CP will 'reshape' itself accordingly.

Hello RefugeDenied,
A couple of additional comments for you...
great news !
If I were to guess, you did not check the box which says "delete web content" before submitting.
Now, a lot of this is getting used to the way "hsphere" does things. Some people love it, some hate it. However, the reasoning behind doing it this way (if you were to look at this as a "feature" vs a "problem") is as follows:
Often times you will want to move content from one domain to another. Or, sometimes you will want to move a domain from one account to another (assuming they are on the same server).
This "feature" within hsphere allows you to remove a DNS zone and maintain the data on the server. Lets say you had your site at www.domain1.com. You bought a new domain and you want to move your data to www.domain2.com. You can delete domain1.com, leave the contents on the servers, add domain2.com, delete the empty domain2.com via FTP, and rename domain2.com to domain1.com via FTP and presto - migration complete.
Yes, if you did not select "delete files" during the delete domain process, you will need to delete the domains via FTP afterwards if you want them removed (or if for some reason the CP did actually fail to delete the files itself - which is rare, but, does happen sometimes in environments where the control panel is not on the same physical server as the web servers, etc)
Hsphere is a little different then cPanel. Each DNS zone is its own presence. Even subdomains are treated as top level domains (rather then add on domains, etc).
Agreed, this could be a little more intuitive and the verbage could be more clear. Having said this, when you delete a DNS zone (domain or sub domain, etc), everything related with that DNS zone will be removed. this includes web content (if selected) and emails associated with that particular DNS zone. Databases will not be deleted however as those are handled separately under MySQL and are not linked to specific DNS zones. Also, if you have any aliases setup to the DNS zone or mail aliases to the DNS zone being deleted, they will indeed be deleted, as aliases are simply aliases, and not their own DNS zone.
Plesk was simply built this way. It is not really a question of a "feature" Plesk had back in 2002 that H-Sphere does not yet have. It is a different way of dealing with a similar issue. Some love it, some hate it.
Thanks as always for your comments and feedback and hopefully my responses are helpful for you...

Hi Andrew,
Just wanted to point something out (not a big deal, just a clarification) ...
This is the domain info screen and the "X" to delete ...

This is the next and final screen before delete ...

No "delete files" - this may be how it is with Windows though.
This makes perfect sense.
What I was getting at here was that on the confirmation page it should show the domain name (or other resource) that you are about to delete. Just a visual confirmation to verify you aren't about to delete the wrong one.
---------------------------
Anyhow, no complaints, just making sure I'm not "doin' it wrong" :)
I've been with my current host for about 6 years ... it might take me a little while to 'unlearn' the cPanel way of doing things ;)
It's early yet, but so far I'm very pleased with Catika. I am only using the lowest (Special) Windows account to test this month (I'm new to Windows hosting, btw). If Cartika continues to impress me through the end of the month, I will upgrade the account and move my handful of domains over.

In this instance, the CP obviously failed to delete the domains from the FTP space and as such required a manual delete. That should be rare, but, can happen from time to time.

Yes, it absolutely should.
