I have seen that there is an option for purchasing VPN accounts with the HSPhere Clustered reseller hosting
I wonder if someone could explain why is it necessary?

Hello,
VPN tunnels provide 2 things really
1) is a static IP
2) data encryption (ie secure communication)
As we continue on with pushing new security protocol out across our fleet, the requirement for a VPN tunnel will just increase. Part of this is being driven by PCI requirements, part of this simply by improving and standardizing our security protocol and some of this simply is common sense.
Right now, resellers who have resold managed VPS, Cloud or Dedicated servers or clusters may want a VPN tunnel for remote access to advanced services like SSH and Remote Desktop to their servers.
Shared customers need static IPs from their ISPs to access remote management of MSSQL4 server currently. If they cannot get a static IP or do not wish to pay what their ISP is asking for a static IP, then a VPN can be used to accomplish the same thing
It is not feasible for us to manage firewall whitelists of dynamic IP pools. We would literally need 100s of support techs simply to sit here and update firewall rules all day long. It is also not advised to leave remote connection ports wide open to all IPs. As we continue to lock down services, the requirement for a static IP from your ISP will increase - and for those who want the added security VPN encryption adds, or for those whos ISPs are not being reasonable with charges for static IPs - our VPN solution is a perfect fit.
